Several new features today!
First, Wikidata “shadow entity node”.
After this update, if you link a local item to a Wikidata item, it doesn’t directly “connect” anymore.
Instead, the local item connects through a proxy called a “shadow entity node”. This special kind of node represents a “Wikidata item’s representative” that lives locally. Think of it as a nation’s ambassador.
Why did I make this feature?
Because I simply wanted to use Wikidata items directly to “group” several local items together.
This "backlinks index" feature automatically shows all local items that link to this local item. However, this backlink tracker doesn’t work if the item lives externally in Wikidata. So, to fix that, I introduced a “shadow entity node” that represents an external Wikidata item but lives locally. By using this shadow entity, we can treat those Wikidata items as local items, and the backlinks work as intended.
For example, here’s a real use case.
I made a local item: “Q27 dewekan”. I linked it to the Wikidata item Q33014: Betawi (Austronesian language of Greater Jakarta, Indonesia). Instead of linking it directly, that Wikidata item, Q33014, is represented as the Q28 shadow entity node, which I renamed to “Basa Betawi”.
This Q28 shadow entity node behaves just like a normal local item, but it has a special, unbreakable bond with Wikidata’s Q33014 item.
The backlink index on this Q28 shadow entity node now works normally. As you can see here, it can track Q27 dewekan.
This is the biggest change in this release. The other feature additions are quite small.
First, you can now search for the items shown on the home page.
You can also create “public lists”, instead of just “private lists”. In a public list, everyone can edit the list.
