One of my favorite use cases of Twitter is using it as my personal journal.
The UX is very satisfying. Making a tweet is easy, and adding image attachments is also simple. You can link several related tweets together in a thread. You can quote relevant pieces of history using quote-retweets. Everything is searchable, and everything is stored chronologically.
So, several days ago, I started making a “live reporting” thread, trying to summarize all the online information I could gather about the 2026 Padang Pariaman horse racing event that will be held tomorrow, on my personal Twitter. I had already made quite significant findings so far, and I trusted Twitter to reliably store that data.
But suddenly, today, I lost access to my Twitter account. They demanded a selfie photo and Australian ID card data in order to regain access to my account. The problem is, I’m not even an Australian citizen. I wonder why Twitter mistakenly assumes that I am an Australian citizen. I don’t even live in Australia.
So, I lost part of my research data there. Not just the 2026 horse racing event, but also the 2025 event (I’ve been doing this for years), and several “live reporting” tweets I made on major world events in the past.
But I still need a quick replacement so my daily workflow won’t be disrupted. The data gathering process is still ongoing.
Basically, it’s just “offline Twitter,” where everything is stored locally in the browser via IndexedDB.
Update: apparently, my Instagram account is also blocked.
.
Update: I appealed to Twitter support, and I’ve now regained access to my Twitter account :D
